A SHELTERED housing complex in Otley has been reopened following a major modernisation scheme.
Leeds City Council has spent just over £2 million on refurbishing Union Court, which has had its old bedsits replaced with one bedroom - and a couple of two bedroom - flats. The project has also created a visitors flat, new laundry facilities and a refurbished lounge.
Ward Councillors Ryk Downes, Colin Campbell and Sandy Lay declared the new-look Union Court officially open on Friday, December 14.
Cllr Downes said: “It was an honour to follow in the footsteps of our old colleague Graham Kirkland, who opened the original building in 1971. The building reflects his commitment to Otley and we have asked that the plaque commemorating the original opening be refurbished and displayed in a prominent location.”
Cllr Campbell said: “Union Court has served the community well for more than forty years and this fantastic refurbishment will allow it to continue well into the future.”
Cllr Lay added: “It is great to have this investment in local facilities. It allows older people to remain within the community, keeping in touch with family and friends.”
