Rawdon Library could be saved after it was given a stay of execution in a major overhaul of services throughout the city.
The New Chapter for the city’s libraries was approved at a meeting of Leeds City Council’s executive board yesterday.
But the proposal to close Rawdon Library has been put on hold for 12 months to allow further exploration of ways of keeping the library open.
It had been planned for Rawdon Library to be replaced by a mobile service.
Campaigners have offered to help man the library on a voluntary basis in a bid to save it.
The decision has delighted Guiseley councillors, who stressed the closure would mean the loss of one of the few remaining community buildings in the area, and backed calls by the Friends of Rawdon Library to look again at the decision.
Councillor Pat Latty said: “I am absolutely delighted. We had a meeting with the friends and they are very positive people – so it is just a matter now of looking to see what we can do.”
