The last time Shirley Gilks tried to win a holiday she came away with some place mats.

But after leaving it for 37 years she tried again – and hit the jackpot Shirley, who lives in Yeadon, will be heading off on a Greek holiday with £500 spending money thrown in after winning the top prize in a Costcutter Supermarkets competition in association with Strongbow Cider.

To win Shirley had to correctly identify which historical Athens landmark was featured on a Strongbow Cider shelf ticket in her local Costcutter store. The answer was the Parthenon.

Shirley, who presented with her prize by Costcutter area manager Jonathan Hastings at her local store in Guiseley on Friday.

She said “I’m delighted to win the competition. I have never been this lucky before. The last time I entered a competition to win a holiday was over 37 years ago when I tried to win a honeymoon for me and my husband, we did win a prize but not the holiday. All we got was the runner’s-up prize of a set of place mats, which we still have!

“So to win the top prize now is marvellous. We absolutely love Greece and although we haven’t decided yet exactly where in Greece I am going, I can’t wait!”

Jonathan Hastings said: “Our competitions are very popular and we had tens of thousands of entries from across the country for this one. The winner was drawn at random from the correct entries so Shirley was very lucky indeed to win the top prize holiday.”
