Scouts in Otley have launched a £125,000 appeal to give their base a new lease on life.

And MP Greg Mulholland has thrown his weight behind the bid to refurbish and modernise the 2nd Otley Scout troop’s hut on Craven Street.

The project will see the building’s outside toilets re-placed with new indoor and disabled facilities, and the kitchen enlarged so it can double up as a craft area.

An extension heated by a renewable energy system will also be added to the hut’s meeting hall, which itself will be given a more efficient heating system that incorporates solar power.

The revamp will represent a new stage for the group, but first they will have to rise to a considerable fundraising chall-enge.

Novita Williamson, represent-ing the Scouts, said: “The Scout hut is in a poor state of repair and needs bringing into the 21st Century.

“We are very pleased to have in the last month received planning permission, which gives us three years in which to get the project completed. The fundraising team is grateful for any offers of help and ideas from local people that could help towards raising funds.

“At the moment we are seeking funding from sources such as the National Lottery Commission, Biffa Award, Green Leeds Limited, local authorities and development agencies. “If anyone would like to help us then please get in touch by e-mailing fundraising@2ndotleyscouts.org.uk.”

Mr Mulholland, the Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West, said: “It was great to meet the scouts, their enthusiasm was infectious and it will be fantastic for them to have this new modern facility.”
