Tomorrow's Yeadon Carnival will be tinged with sad-ness following the death of its treasurer, Michael Charnley.

Mr Charnley, who died in June after a long illness, had been a stalwart of the carnival since it was rescued by volunteers five years ago.

This week, as organisers prepared for Saturday’s event, the chairman of Yeadon Carnival paid tribute to Mr Charnley.

Otley town councillor Nigel Francis said: “He has always given me inspiration. If I have said to him I don’t think we can do this Michael, he has said ‘Oh yes you can’”.

He said Mr Charnley, who ran the bell and chime orchestra in Otley with his wife, Carol, had also staged concerts for Coun Francis’s charity.

“When Hang on to a Dream has needed help he has always stepped in and said we will do a concert with the bell and chime orchestra,” said Coun Francis.

Saturday’s carnival is being hailed as one of the biggest so far with a record number of vintage cars on display.

It will be staged at the top of Yeadon High Street on the Tarn playing fields, starting at noon and running until 4.30pm.

There will also be a parade down the High Street and a cavalcade of vintage cars tak-ing place at 1pm.

A number of local youth and schools bands and dancers will entertain the crowds and for the younger members there will be Punch & Judy, along with face painting and magic.

The Knaresborough Accordion and Fiddle Band will play as well as the Hall Royd Brass Band, both of which were popular last year. Terry Atha will again provide a number of fairground attractions.

Over 50 vintage cars will be on display, showcasing the nation’s motoring history.

Coun Francis said: “Each year we had had to overcome many problems but there is no way we would let down the people of Yeadon. It should be a day to remember.”
