Ilkley Film Society ends its current season on Sunday, June 2 with the coming-of-age comedy Are You There God ? It's Me Margaret (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).

Adapted from one of the best-known novels of Judy Blume, the multi-million selling author of young adult fiction, whose books are famous for combining entertainment with serious topics, the film centres on an 11 year-old girl whose parents, a Christian mother and a Jewish father, pull up their roots in the New Jersey suburbs and move to New York.

Margaret has to deal all at once with settling into a new environment and school, the onset of puberty, and a decision on which, if any, religion she is going to adopt – her parents have left this up to her. This decision is complicated by the mutual adoration between Margaret and her maternal grandmother (a marvellous supporting performance from Kathy Bates).

Abby Ryder Fortson (actually three years older than the part she plays) gives a performance of great charm and sensitivity in the leading role. Director Kelly Fremon Craig co-wrote the screenplay with Judy Blume.

As this is an American film it will be screened with hard-of-hearing subtitles in accordance with the Film Society's policy on English-language films.

As is customary with the Film Society's closing film, the screening will be preceded by wine & nibbles, and there will also be a sale of Blu-ray and DVD discs (cash only) with all proceeds going to the Society's funds.

Guests are welcome (tickets £5) but are requested to email via the Society's website at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk or phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to ensure admission.

The Film Society's 55th season will begin on Sunday 8th September. Prospective new members should visit the website and leave contact details for the Membership Secretary in order to receive an application form and details of the coming season.
