A burglary at a Newtown High Street bank is still being investigated by police.

The Santander branch in Newtown town centre was targeted by thieves during the early morning of Friday, March 22.

It is believed that tens of thousands of pounds were stolen from a cash machine within just eight minutes.

Dyfed-Powys Police gave an update on Tuesday, April 30, saying that the investigation is still ongoing.

Police cordoned off the branch, which reopened a few days after the burglary, with tape while officers gathered evidence from the scene, carried out shop-to-shop and CCTV enquiries.

Officers were particularly interested in a large black Audi estate car that they believe was used in the burglary.

Dyfed-Powys Police previously said that their officers were working with other forces following similar burglaries at Santander branches in Holywell, Flintshire and Malvern, Worcestershire during March.

Last month, a spokesperson for the force said: “We are aware of the other incidents nationally and are liaising with other Police Forces to establish any links, we are keeping an open mind.

“We are continuing to appeal to anyone with information that could help officers with their investigation.

“We are particularly interested in a large black Audi estate car which we believe was used during the burglary.

“If you have CCTV or dashcam footage from the area of High Street, Newtown, in the early hours of Friday, March 22, please get in touch.”

Police added that officers would like thank members of the public that have responded to their appeals.
