FRIENDS of Wharfedale Greenway (FOWG) recently organised a social evening at The Swan in Addingham to provide an opportunity for supporters and Addingham residents to find out more about the greenway proposals and recent progress.
A spokesperson said: "We expected a small number of people to drop in over the course of the evening however it almost turned into a case of 'no room at the inn'. Twenty-three people turned up for the meeting which was fantastic, resulting in the landlady moving us into a larger room.
"Colm McCann (vice chair of FOWG) welcomed everyone to the meeting and provided an update on the greenway’s progress, key challenges to developing the greenway and the work of FOWG. Colm advised that two new councillors were joining Addingham Parish Council, both of whom have a keen interest in local environmental issues, including examining ways to take forward the Wharfedale Greenway."
Local resident and FOWG member, Colin Waterman, said during the meeting: “It’s amazing to see such a high level of interest amongst the local community. It’s so encouraging for FOWG.”
FOWG are supporting Town and Parish Council’s along the valley in working towards developing the Wharfedale Greenway and engaging local communities in the project. The proposed route is a traffic free green corridor throughout the valley to provide increased access to green spaces for all sections of the community – walkers, cyclists; young families, parents with pushchairs; disabled access and horse riders.
The proposed Wharfedale Greenway is a part of growing network of existing and planned greenways in this part of Yorkshire. FOWG recently developed a map showing these routes aimed at raising awareness of these routes for everyone to enjoy.
