TWO Guiseley and Rawdon councillors are funding and distributing speed awareness stickers for residents to put on their wheelie bins, as part of efforts to cut speeding in the area.

Councillors Paul Wadsworth and Paul Alderson have been working with officers in Leeds City Council’s Highways Department and the West Yorkshire Police to deter and prevent excess speed on residential streets.

The councillors say that speeding is an issue which is raised by residents time and time again, and as a result they feel the stickers will be a simple, yet effective reminder to motorists if they see them placed on wheelie bins throughout the ward.

The councillors are currently distributing stickers where they believe they will be most effective, however if any resident of Guiseley and Rawdon ward would like one, they are asked to get in contact with Cllr Wadsworth (paul.wadsworth@leeds.gov.uk).

Cllr Wadsworth said: “Speeding is a serious issue in our area, which residents raise time and time again. These wheelie bin stickers are a simple visual reminder that you are in a residential area and the speed limit is there for a reason. They are free and I would urge any resident who wishes to have one to get in contact.”

Cllr Alderson added: “It is well known that speed is a significant factor in being killed or seriously injured on the road. Data cited by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has a 1.5% chance at 20mph versus 8% at 30mph. Clearly any fatality on our roads is one too many and I am delighted to support this initiative to bring down speeds on our residential streets.”
