GUISELEY have signed a former FIFA World Cup goalscorer.

In a move that nobody saw coming, the Northern Premier League Premier Division have signed 41-year-old striker Shane Smeltz.

He is most famous for scoring for New Zealand in the 2010 World Cup, his strike securing a famous 1-1 draw against the reigning champions Italy.

He won 58 caps in all for his country, scoring 24 goals.

His A-League record is nothing to be sniffed at either, with his 92 goals making him the third top scorer in their history behind Besart Berisha and Jamie Maclaren.

His playing days were supposedly done, so the move has come as a shock.

Smeltz explained all to Rachel O'Connor for Guiseley's website, saying: “I have recently come to Leeds with my family and settled here for family and work reasons.

“I let a few people know that I may want to play and I ended up talking with the Guiseley manager Paul Phillips.

“One thing led to another and I looked into it and the club appealed to me.

“Obviously I am joining to play my part on the pitch and however the manager and the staff see fit.”
