AN Otley care home resident has enjoyed getting a card from his namesake King Charles III for turning 100.

Charles ‘Roy’ Stonell celebrated turning 100 at a party with friends and relatives at Anchor’s Wharfeside care home in Westgate where he has lived for six years.

Grandfather of four Charles was born in Charlton and served in the RAF as a ground crew technician during the war. After the war, he worked as a coppersmith sheet maker.

Charles said: “The secret to a long life is drink well, it grounds you. I won’t say anything else though, as it’s a secret! I’m very proud of my family though, especially my grandson who works at Windsor Castle.”

Wharfeside manager Louise Bulcock said: “Mr Stonell is a lovely person and we’re all delighted to be celebrating his 100th birthday. He’s a real character and always likes taking part in activities with us. His favourite activities are cocktail making and gardening.”
