THE oldest member of the Washburn Heritage Centre, Cyril Wilkinson, celebrated his 100th birthday in style on Sunday, October 16.

Surrounded by friends and family, Cyril's day included a surprise visit from the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Bob Gettings and his wife the Lady Mayoress of Leeds, Councillor Lesley Gettings. The Lord Mayor presented Cyril with a congratulatory certificate and commemorative mug. Cyril, in return gave the Lord Mayor a Washburn Valley recipe book which features his celebrated parkin recipe and a tin of the famous parkin.

The Lord Mayor said: "I was delighted to visit Cyril Wilkinson of Otley at Ghyll Royd Care Home in Guiseley to help celebrate his 100th birthday. It is a remarkable achievement to reach such a great age and still have a zest for life. I was equally pleased when Cyril presented me with some of his famous parkin made to his own recipe. It happens to be one of my favourites and my Mother made it every week when I was a boy."

Cyril declared himself delighted with his special day saying: "I feel very lucky to have celebrated my 100th birthday. The day spent with my family and friends and meeting the Lord and Lady Mayoress was very special and one to be remembered."
