OTLEY Lions Club new president, Gareth Dibble, who was installed at the start of July, is calling on the local community to show its support for the charity.

For over 40 years Otley Lions has supported some great causes locally, nationally and internationally by raising money within the community. For his presidential year, Mr Dibble has chosen two local charities for his President’s Project, Prickly Pigs Hedgehog Rescue in Otley and Homeless Hampers, a Leeds charity supporting people without a roof and hostels and refuges in the Leeds and Wakefield area.

One hundred per cent of money raised from this year’s Christmas activities will be split between the two charities. In addition, this summer the club was pleased to promise £750 of support to Otley Food Bank, in the form of fortnightly supermarket shops to help keep the shelves stocked as the Food Bank supports additional families during the school holidays.

Club President Gareth Dibble said: “In the current economic climate, it’s more important than ever to provide support to families struggling locally. We are pleased to support Otley Food Bank in the crucial work they do.”

Mr Dibble went on to explain that for many years Otley Lions Club has enjoyed healthy membership numbers, however, due to various reasons the club has found itself suffering a decline in membership.

He said: "Without an increase in membership over the next few months, there is a real danger that the much loved Otley charity will be forced to close the doors of the club along with the bookshop on Mercury Row and end the much needed support that the club provides locally.

"The time members give to Lions depends on their own personal circumstances and the community activities ongoing. The club meets on the second Monday of each month at 7.30pm at the Horse and Farrier, to plan fundraising ideas, projects and discuss welfare matters.

"From just a few hours per month, members can and do make a difference in our community. To help save Otley Lions Club, please consider becoming a member of this local charitable organisation, where fundraising and friendship go hand in hand."
