MEMBERS of one of the two mountain rescue organisations in Craven gathered recently to commemorate some truly remarkable volunteers who together have put in many decades of service to the community.

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee medal was awarded to many members of the Grassington based Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (UWFRA) along with certificates to mark ten, 20, 30, and 40 years of service.

In addition, Ken Robinson and Kevin Stead received certificates for 50 years service. Several others who are no longer on operational duties but none-the-less fulfil vital roles, have been in the team more than 60 years.

UWFRA has been rescuing people and animals from the caves, mineshafts, fells and crags of Wharfedale, Nidderdale, Littondale and Mid-Airedale for more than 70 years. Its rescue services remain free to all who need them, day or night and are financed entirely by fundraising events and donations.
