GARNETT'S Field in Otley was transformed on Sunday, June 26th into a family fun cycling stage.

The second Otley cycling family fun day featured a twisting and turning skills grass course for children and an area for adults to try out a pair of e bikes from Chevin Cycles, who also carried out safety checks on bikes.

Members of the Otley Cycling Club led a group family ride around quieter and safer roads in Otley. The police were able to attend for the morning and a number of families took the opportunity to have their bikes identification marked.

The event was organised by Otley Town Council with support from partners Otley Cycling Club and Chevin Cycles.

Otley Town councillor Mick Bradley, who led in organising the event, was delighted with the turnout.

“We more than doubled the attendance of last year showing that families want safe places for their children to enjoy and practice to become confident safe cyclists," he said. "Again lots of young children came along with their parents on push bikes and balance bikes many of them completing the full circuit several times if a little slower than the older more proficient young cyclists who speeded around the course!

"I want to thank Otley Cycling Club, Chevin Cycles, Otley 2030, the Police and fellow councillors, in particular Jo Allen and other course setters; Fred, Tony and Richard, together with volunteer stewards who all supported the event. The event is set to become a regular feature in the annual Otley festivals calendar!”

There will be a further opportunity to develop bike handling skills at a summer school on August 4th and 5th August in Prince Henry’s Grammar School's grounds. Booking details of the half day bike skills course for four to 11-year-olds will be sent through local schools soon.

There will be a photo display of the family cycling event in Otley Core Resource Centre over the next few weeks.
