THE second Otley cycling family fun day will be held at Garnetts Field, close to the River Wharfe, in Otley on Sunday, June 26th from 10am to 3pm. Entry is free.

The event is organised by Otley Town Council with support from Otley Cycling Club and Chevin Cycles.

Otley Town councillor Mick Bradley (Danefield) who has taken a leading role in organising the event said: “This relaxed cycling day for families provides an opportunity for some fun!

"Last year's attendance showed that families want safe places for their children to become confident cyclists. We are hopeful that the event will become a regular feature in the annual Otley festivals calendar.

"This year it coincides with the Great Get Together (remembering Jo Cox MP). Please do come along, bring a picnic and enjoy yourselves.”

The event will see children having a bit of fun, a bit of a challenge and improve their skills on the grass cyclocross circuit (bring own bike, helmet and a drink).

Last year some children as young as three years old on balance bikes and scooters could enjoy this off road course while older 10/11-year-olds could master its twists and turns. Basic bike checks are also available.

Parents can get busy trying out the increasingly popular option of an e-bike provided by Chevin Cycles on easy ground (bring own helmet). Adults can also try out two variety of cargo bikes from Ilkley Climate Action, which can be hired. These can transport a full shop or other heavy goods including children.

When children want a break from cycling they can have a creative time in the Sticker Art gazebo. Adults can look around the stalls including Otley 2030. There should be an ice cream van just outside the field along with drinks available from Bon Apps.

A short family ride around Otley departs at 11.30am using safer routes. It will be led by Otley Cycling Club, to book in advance for this call 01943 466335 or email admin@otleytowncouncil.gov.uk for booking form.

There will be a further opportunity to develop bike handling skills at a summer school on August 4th and 5th August in Prince Henry’s Grammar School's grounds.

Details will be circulated through local schools shortly.
