WORK is due to start next week on vital roof repairs at a Menston church.

Scaffolding began this week at St John’s parish church in advance of the start of works on the insulating and re-slating of its roof. Work is expected to last approximately 10 weeks.

The vicar, Revd Steve Proudlove, said: "This is a huge moment in the life of St John’s and in the history of Menston village. As well as ensuring a functioning parish church for years to come, this project will reduce our carbon footprint at a time of global climate crisis. We are immensely grateful to all who have generously contributed towards this project.

"Important to note is that Sunday morning services will continue as normal, but the church building will be closed to the public outside of these times and throughout the week, except for Saturday weddings. Thursday morning service will take place in the parish rooms. Sadly, we cannot open the church building for prayer and reflection at other times in order to keep everyone safe during the works.

"The cost of the roof project will be in excess of £210,000 and we are still working to reach this total. If you wish to donate to the church roof appeal, text CHURCHROOF 10 to 70450 to donate £10 (or any whole number up to 20). You will be billed the donation amount plus your standard network rate."

St John's, Menston marked its 150th anniversary in 2021. On 28th April 1871 the Wharfedale Observer reported how a procession led by the choir from Burley-in-Wharfedale sang Onward Christian Soldiers and the new congregation filed into the shiny new pews in Menston Church.

The church still plays an important role in the local community, hosting regular Mother’s Union meetings and a youth club, alongside a number of weekly services.

Over the last ten years, the slated roof has been rapidly deteriorating and a full replacement of most of the roof covering is urgently needed if irreparable damage to the fabric of the building is to be avoided. Last year the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust (YHCT) was delighted to award £4,000 towards the repair costs.

The church is a much -loved building and the local community have also rallied round to help with the fundraising efforts, including hosting an open gardens event and taking part in a sponsored walk.
