Plans for an indoor karting arena at Guiseley have been submitted to Leeds City council.

The arena, which is planned for the site of the former Wendy Wools, at Gordon Mills, is intended for ten karts which will be powered by Honda engines.

The planned arena will be for use by teenagers and adults, but if it is successful it could be followed by the conversion of another shed to create an arena for junior electric karts.

The proposals, which are being submitted by CRL Architects on behalf of TB Ramsden and Co, have already been turned down once by planners who felt the report on noise abatement was not adequate for them to approve the scheme.

But now the plans are being submitted again after tests were carried out to assess noise levels.

There have been concerns among residents about the scheme's impact on the environment but the architects are stressing that they will be virtually negligible.

David Cook, from CRL, said because the buildings were built in the 1970s and 80s, they were designed to prevent noise from escaping.

"The buildings have been built with very substantial noise attenuation," he said.

When tests were recently carried out by a sound engineer he couldn't hear the noise outside the building, he said.

"It really should have no effect on the environment except that there is a redundant mill building going to be put to good use."

Mr Cook said the arena would take a maximum of ten karts. If this went well there was also a future plan to convert one of the other sheds for junior electric karts which didn't make any noise at all, he said.
