WATCH out for Ilkley’s Orange day of action in support of the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on Thursday, November 25. There will be pom poms on the tree guards along the Grove, orange bunting on the bandstand organised by Ilkley Soroptimists. Ilkley BID is also supporting the orange hand display in the shop windows, whilst Ilkley Town Council has organised orange floodlighting
This coordinated approach directly supports the UN 2021 theme of ‘Orange the World, end violence against women now’. Globally, 137 women are killed by a family member or partner every day. Restricted movement, social isolation and economic insecurity are increasing women’s vulnerability to violence in the home. The UN estimates with COVID that for every three months lockdown continues worldwide, an additional 15 million women are expected to be affected by violence.
