A FAMILY fun cycling event is to take place in Otley.

The event will take place at Garnett's Field from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday, July 4. Entry is free and there is no need to book. Children will be able to improve their skills on the grass cyclocross circuit - they should bring their own bike and helmet. Parents will get the chance to try out an E bike from Chevin Cycles - they should bring their own helmet. Basic bike checks will be available.

Cargo bikes will be on display from Ilkley Climate Action with a selection of stalls and a craft tent for children. A morning and an afternoon short family ride around Otley using safer routes will be led by a qualified ride leader from Otley Cycling Club. To book in advance for this call 01943 466335 or email admin@otleytowncouncil.gov.uk for a booking form. The event is organised by Otley town council with support from Otley Cycling Club and Chevin Cycles.

Town councillor Mick Bradley, who has taken a leading role, said: “We have been short of outdoor events this summer so this relaxed cycling day for families provides an opportunity for some fun. I’m hoping for third time lucky as the first year this event had to be cancelled due to a deluge of rain and last year because of covid. Please do come along and enjoy yourselves.”

The event is being advertised through schools, some of which will have bike repair workshops in July. Anyone attending is asked to bring their own drinks and snacks. Garnetts Field will be made Covid secure with an entrance on Riverdale Road and exit point on Mill Lane. Additional toilets and wash areas will be provided, with sanitisers and use of masks where necessary.
