OTLEY Bridge will be closed on Sunday to allow routine maintenance to be carried out.

The work, on behalf of Leeds City Council, will involve undertaking a principal inspection of the structure to record its condition.

The proposed works are due to start at 9.30 am and to finish at 3.30pm, on Sunday May 16. Diversions will be in place.

A council spokesman said: "We appreciate the disruption these works may cause and every possible measure to reduce this has been implemented. The footpath will remain open."

Otley and Yeadon councillor Colin Campbell said the inspection was an annual one and involved closure of the bridge

"This will be a routine inspection but because it requires the bridge to be closed I would urge everyone to put the date in their diary so they are not caught out," he said.

Otley Bridge is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and the earliest section dates back to the 13th century.
