A FORMER Great Britain athlete who set out to mark his 74th birthday by running 100 miles in ten days has raised £1,000 for charity.

Norman Deakin set himself the fundraising challenge in aid of Hearing Dogs For Deaf People and he beat his own target by finishing in nine days.

He also received a message from Justgiving which said:"Your 100 miles in ten days page was one of the most successful JustGiving pages last month. Out of thousands of fundraisers, you were in the top 10 per cent."

Mr Deakin, from Addingham, has been running for 60 years and and has represented Great Britain in distances ranging from 15K to the marathon.

He said:“I have been a speaker/fundraiser for Hearing Dogs for circa ten years and have been privileged to see first-hand how deaf people have had their lives transformed through the provision of an assistance dog. "
