ILKLEY MP Robbie Moore is backing Climate Action llkley’s peat-free campaign which urges gardeners not to use peat based products to protect the environment.
Mr Moore said: “Using peat-free compost is a quick and easy step in reducing our carbon footprint and doing our bit. Peatlands are an invaluable source of carbon storage as well as providing natural flood defences by retaining water. Our continued use of peat-based compost will have dire and long-lasting consequences on national and global environments. Please make this small change now to help protect future generations.”
A spokesperson for Climate Action Ilkley said: “If retailers are reluctant to change, our best hope of eliminating peat use is for gardeners to voluntarily stop using it. Many excellent responsibly-sourced alternatives have been developed in recent years and several retailers in and around Ilkley now stock peat-free compost.”
