Nearly 10,000 people tested positive for coronavirus in London last week.

According to figures published by Public Health England, 9,916 people in the capital tested positive for Covid-19 in the seven days up to October 17.

Data shows Ealing has more cases per 100,000 people than any other borough, with a rate of 151.0. In the seven days up to October 17, 516 cases were reported in Ealing.

There was also a rise in cases in Barnet (423), Enfield (436), Hackney and City of London (426), Newham (424), Redbridge (408) and Tower Hamlets (409).

Bexley saw the least number of people test positive last week, with 173 cases.

Merton (183) and Sutton (179) also reported a low number of positive tests compared with the rest of the capital.

Last week, London was placed into the Government's Tier 2 category for coronavirus restrictions.

What are Tier 2 restrictions?

People are prohibited from socialising with anybody outside their household or support bubble in any indoor setting.

Tradespeople can continue to go into a household for work.

The rule of six continues to apply for socialising outdoors, for instance in a garden or public space like a park or beach.

Businesses and venues can continue to operate, but pubs and restaurants must ensure that customers consume food and drink only while seated, and close between 10pm and 5am.

Takeaway food can continue to be sold after 10pm if ordered online or by phone.

Schools and universities remain open.

Places of worship remain open, but people may not mingle in groups of more than six.

Weddings and funerals can go ahead with restrictions on the numbers attending (15 and 30 respectively).

Exercise classes and organised sport can continue to take place outdoors but will only be permitted indoors if it is possible for people to avoid mixing with those they do not live with (or share a support bubble with), or for youth or disability sport.

Travel is permitted to amenities that are open, for work or to access education, but people are advised to reduce the number of journeys where possible.

How many people are in hospital?

As of Tuesday (October 20), there are 555 people battling coronavirus in hospitals in London, with 87 of those on ventilators.

In total, 6,329 people have died in London within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus, while 8,650 people have Covid-19 on their death certificate.
