MP PHILIP Davies is backing a campaign calling for shopworkers to be given better protection from attacks at work.

He has pledged his support to British Retail Consortium calls for a toughening of legislation – including stricter sentences for offenders.

The campaign comes as figures show that attacks on shopworkers have doubled since the start of lockdown.

“Having spent many years working in retail before becoming an MP I am acutely aware of the unacceptable abuse shopworkers face all too regularly,” said Mr Davies, whose Shipley constituency includes Burley-in-Wharfedale and Menston.

“Coronavirus should have shown us all how much we rely on our shopworkers and helped us appreciate them more – and yet the levels of abuse have gone up, which is completely outrageous. We must do more to support our shopworkers.”

The consortium also wants to see attacking a shopworker made a specific criminal offence, something Mr Davies has previously called for.
