FIREWORKS with the bat from Joe Root, Adam Lyth and Will Fraine set up a landslide Vitality Blast 99-run win over Derbyshire at Emerald Headingley.

Yorkshire ended their unwanted T20 hoodoo against the Falcons, securing a first win against them in seven attempts dating back to the start of the 2017 season.

The Vikings’ 220-5 was their eighth score of 220 or more in T20 history and followed Thursday’s opening night washout against Nottinghamshire here.

Root top-scored with 64 off 40 balls, Lyth hit 61 off 36 and Fraine smashed a late 44 not out off only 16 balls.

England Test captain Root then struck twice in his second over with the ball - the fifth of the Derby chase - as they crumbled to 19-4 and later finished on 121-9.

Matthew Fisher claimed 3-21 from his four overs, the pick of the home figures.

Root and Lyth smacked five leg-side sixes, while Fraine matched that tally off his own bat as the visitors were punished for erring in line and length on a typically excellent Headingley pitch.

Second-wicket pair Root and Lyth shared 84 inside nine overs to advance from 32-1 in the third after Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who fell for 16, had won the toss and elected to bat.

Root offered a sharp chance to Derby skipper Billy Godleman at cover on 43 off Matt Critchley’s leg-spin.

Both he and Lyth finally fell caught sweeping to deep mid-wicket off another leggie, Mattie McKiernan - 160-3 in the 16th when Root fell.

Fraine then peppered the Headingley seats on both sides of the wicket and benefitted from a series of full tosses as he posted an early career best score.

He hit the lion’s share of 22 from seamer Fynn Hudson-Prentice off the last over of the innings.

Derbyshire’s reply was then likely to go one of two ways. They would either make a fist of it or fall in a heap. And, thankfully for Yorkshire, it proved to be the latter.

Fisher struck with his first ball at the start of the second over, bowling Luis Reece.

He then had Wayne Madsen superbly caught at backward point by a diving Jordan Thompson at the end of the fourth over.

Root, with his off-spinners, then continued his excellent day and gave a reminder to the England selectors that his all-round capabilities would be valuable at next October’s T20 World Cup in India.

With the first ball of the fifth over, he trapped Godleman lbw and then had Leus du Plooy caught at cover later in the over as he finished with 2-7 from two overs.

Leg-spinner Josh Poysden then struck in his first appearance since last July - the meeting between these two sides at Chesterfield - having suffered and recovered from a fractured skull.

He had Alex Hughes caught at short third-man and Hudson-Prentice caught at cover as the visitors slipped to 70-6 after 13 overs.

Harry Brook, Fisher again and debutant George Hill claimed further wickets, with captain Kohler-Cadmore using a smorgasbord of bowlers - eight in all.

Yorkshire face Notts at Trent Bridge tomorrow afternoon in their third North Group fixture (2pm).

It is hoped Root, pending England selection ahead of forthcoming limited overs matches against Australia, will feature again for a buoyant Vikings outfit.
