TWO people have been taken to Leeds General Infirmary after a serious accident between a lorry and an Audi Q3 car closed the M62 eastbound this morning.

The accident occurred between junction 26 M606 (Chain Bar) and junction 27 M621 (Gildersome).

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "

"At 8.37am today, police were called to a road traffic collision on the M62 eastbound between junctions 26 and 27.

"The incident involved an Audi Q3 and a DAF HGV. The occupants of the Audi, a 74-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, have both been taken to hospital with serious injuries. The HGV driver was unhurt.

"A closure and diversion is in place on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 26 and 27 while the scene is dealt with and drivers are advised to avoid the area."

Emergency services were called to the scene including two road ambulances, the air ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and a hazardous area response team.

Fire crews from Cleckheaton fire station also attended.

Congestion built up to to Hartshead Moor Services after J25 (Brighouse).

The accident also resulted in a large diesel spillage.

Motorists were stopped to allow the Air Ambulance to land though it was not required.

Traffic was being turned around on the entry slip road at J26.

Normal traffic conditions are expected between 11:45 and 12:00

Diversion: Via the A58 towards Leeds, turning onto the A650 Wakefield Road and rejoining at J27.
