THE Government U-turn on A level results has been met with delight across Otley and Aireborough.

But students and teachers are also concerned about the effect the “fiasco” will have on university places.

Leeds North West Labour MP Alex Sobel said: ‘I am pleased that the U turn we have been calling has finally happened, not before a lot of stress and anxiety was caused to our young people and their parents including many in my constituency. If the Government had simply trusted our teachers from the start and planned properly for this very foreseeable circumstance then this whole situation could have been avoided. I hope that this fiasco will not have a detrimental effect on those waiting for confirmation on university places. “

The Conservative MP for Pudsey, Horsforth and Aireborough said: “I have spent the last few days speaking to headteachers, teachers, parents and students and completely understand the worry this has caused. I can only apologise for this and I made my views known to Ministers forcibly. While I appreciate a perfect solution was never going to be possible in the absence of exams and that this was a difficult time for all involved, I am pleased they have listened and scrapped the algorithm for both A-Level and GCSE results.”

Yorkshire party leader Bob Buxton said: “I’m delighted at the u-turn and hope that those who were wrongly denied university places last week are given a second chance. With fewer overseas students this coming year, there is more room for UK students. Where courses are nevertheless full, I hope the government can provide funding for extra places - it is their fault, after all.”

Benton Park School described the u-turn as a “welcome development”. It said many students and teachers had been “upset and shocked” at the grades they received.
