THE Mali Tricolour flag is flying in Burley-in-Wharfedale to celebrate a 20 year link between the village and Tereli in Mali, West Africa.
The link - The Burley-Tereli Friendship Trust (BTFT) - was inspired by Channel 4 journalist Jon Snow’s millennium project ‘On the Line’ which encouraged all who live along the Meridian Line to discover more about the lives, countries and environments of their ‘neighbours’ on the line.
As the line passes through Mali it was decided this would be a good opportunity for people in Burley to link with people living in Téréli.
The Trust become a registered charity in 2006 and has gone from strength to strength working to fund a variety of life-enhancing projects over the years.
Currently the Trust is launching an Emergency Appeal as there is fear of famine in the region as a result of violent attacks by bandits, climate change and Covid 19. To find out how to donate to the appeal visit http://btft.org.uk
