FIVE fundraisers tackled the Yorkshire Three Peaks in aid of a men’s mental health charity.

The hikers, all from Ilkley, raised more than £1,500 for Andy’s Man Club- a charity which was formed in 2016 by Halifax rugby league player Luke Ambler after his brother-in-law took his own life.

Seasoned charity fundraiser and property developer Andy Sharpe, 32, was joined by barman Luke Thompson, 22, student Oli Glover, 21, Tesco customer assistant Ned Cheetham, 18, and student Jack Jones, 18, to complete the challenge at the weekend.

Andy said: “Despite the very poor weather conditions throughout the day, we successfully completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks in just over 10 hours. Thanks to the generosity of our friends and family, a brilliant £1,500 has been raised so far in support of the Men’s Mental Health Charity Andy’s Man Club.

“Thankfully more Men across the UK are now talking openly regarding their mental health and we feel very proud to be supporting such an incredible charity who are playing a key role in making this happen.”

Since being launched in 2016 the group has expanded across the country and now more than 800 men attend its groups each week.

On their go fund me page the fundraisers say: “The aim of ‘Andy’s Man Club’ is to get people talking about mental health issues and halve the suicide rate amongst men in the UK, which is currently the largest cause of death of men aged under 45.”

The charity has centres around the country, including Leeds and Bradford.

On its website it says: “ We are talking groups for men because -

You’ve either been through a storm, currently going through a storm or have a storm brewing in your life.”

It says: “Andy Roberts was loving and doting father, son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. He was an all round top guy, one of the truly nicest people.

“His love for his daughter was inspirational to see and the way he looked at her and idolised her was a blessing. Sadly and tragically without any warning Andrew, at 23 years old, was taken away from all his family and friends by suicide.

“On average one man every two hours takes his life in the UK. It’s often said a factor is that men don’t talk. Thats why we were born to break down these stigmas. At ANDYSMANCLUB you don’t have to be suicidal or have a mental health problem, we just want to get men talking. That change starts with you.”

Earlier this year Andy Sharpe completed a fancy dress marathon to raise £2,390 for the Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity. He has also raised money for other good causes.
