ILKLEY resident and WWII veteran Betty Burgess celebrated her century in style this weekend with fellow residents and staff of Abbeydale Residential Home.

This was their second party of the month following the 75th anniversary of VE day a week earlier.

Betty served in the WAAF throughout the war, becoming an officer and specialising in codes and ciphers. She flew to Belgium shortly after D-day and was in Hamburg on VE day.

Betty moved to Yorkshire from her beloved Suffolk 20 years ago to be nearer to her daughter and grandsons and lived for some time in Addingham before moving to Abbeydale.

Betty was delighted to receive 130 cards, many from primary school children in Ilkley and Addingham, as well from the Queen and the Mayor of Ilkley. Thanks to the Abbeydale team and to the singing duo Adele and Renato her party went with a swing despite lockdown
