COUNCILLOR Anne Hawkesworth (Ind, Ilkley) is urging people to remember to ‘Be Moor Aware’ while out exercising on Ilkley Moor.
The safety campaign was launched last year by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service in response to major moor fires in the county, including a huge blaze on Ilkley Moor over the Easter weekend. The campaign calls for people to never light a fire in the countryside, including barbecues.
Cllr Hawkesworth said: “Hopefully the lockdown will prevent the threat to the moors of fires. Ilkley really can’t take fighting on two fronts. More to the point nor can the emergency services. It is coming up to the anniversary of the appalling events last year with its danger to to lives wildlife and humans and its close proximity to property.
“Don’t forget -Be Moor Aware - when exercising.”
