ILKLEY Grammar School Under-16s capped off another successful season by winning the Yorkshire Cup.

The team if year 11 pupils beat Crossley Heath Grammar School 24-10 in the Yorkshire Cup final at Rodillian Academy on March 7.

"It was a huge achievement for the same team to reach the final in two consecutive years," said Adam Falkner, PE teacher and head of rugby at Ilkley Grammar. "The team have played really well together for a few years now and proved it last year by reaching a National Schools' semi-final and winning the Yorkshire Cup last year, surpassing any previous Ilkley Grammar School rugby team by winning the cup outright."

Ilkley faced a strong Crossley Heath team in the final this year and it was a competitive game for 60 minutes which Ilkley had led for most of the game.

In the 60th minute, Crossley Heath crossed Ilkley's try line for the first time taking the score to 14-10.

Ilkley gathered themselves and responded immediately with a try off their own a minute after the kick-off, making it 19-10.

Ilkley didn't stop there, as they knew they had to finish strong and fend off a comeback by their opponents.

Crossley Heath succumbed to a barrage of Ilkley's attacks and strong ball carries, which led to the final try of the game by Ilkley, making the final score 24-10.

Last year, the same group of players as under-15s lost to Hutton Grammar School in the National Schools Bowl competition but later beat Wolfreton School 12-7 to win the Yorkshire Cup final.

A previous Ilkley Grammar under-15s shared the Yorkshire Cup in 2013 when they drew with Ermysted's Grammar School in the final.
