CONWY should have a county schools’ football team according to Aberconwy AM, Janet Finch-Saunders
She has argued the lack of a county team may have resulted in pupils missing out on opportunities to represent Wales in matches, such as against Scotland, Ireland, Cyprus and Malta.
Correspondence with Conwy council has indicated an effort will be made to establish a team during the next academic year.
Mrs Finch-Saunders said: “We have a wealth of sporting talent in our county, and I am delighted that the local authority shares my ambition of ensuring all pupils receive the best chance to compete at the highest level. This is important for their personal development and for promoting the county to a wide audience.
"I am delighted that plans are afoot to create a squad next academic year.
“PE teachers and local teams make a fantastic contribution, but the provision of a county team would make it a hattrick for our young people with footballing ambitions.”
A spokesperson for Conwy council said: “We are continuing to work with the PE Association to ensure that all pupils receive the best opportunity to compete at the highest level.
"This includes exploring opportunities for establishing a schools county football team.
