YEADON Tarn looks set to finally get a cafe after an application was submitted to convert a sailing centre classroom.

Planners are considering a proposal for a change of use of the classroom at the Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre .

Councillors for the area say the need for a cafe is one of the issues most often raised by local people. The three Otley and Yeadon ward councillors, Colin Campbell, Sandy Lay and Ryk Downes have been in discussion with Leeds City Council for some time about the possibility of a cafe.

They have now welcomed the news that Leeds has put forward a planning application.

Cllr Campbell said: “Yeadon Tarn is one of the busiest parks in Leeds. Residents and visitors are always asking why such a popular destination does not have a modern cafe.”

Cllr Lay added: “Following long discussions with the City Council they have now come up with a proposal to convert part of the ground floor of the Activity Centre into a cafe.

“This will provide a waterside venue with a terrace so after a walk round the Tarn you will be able to have a ‘latte by the lake’.

Cllr Downes said: “Hopefully the work can take place quickly. with the new cafe being open for spring next year.

“It will provide an ideal location for visitors to sit and watch the sailing boats, fishermen and women, birds and even aeroplanes.”

The changes will include new cladding to the front of the building and replacement windows and doors.

The Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre is operated by Leeds City Council. It offers a wide range of activities sailing, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding,

rafting, windsurfing and rowing.

It also offers climbing, abseiling, orienteering, off road biking, bushcraft, and archery.
