THE SECOND World War will be the theme of the next meeting of Ilkley Local History Hub.

Organisers want to hear from anyone who has Christmas stories from the period during the event at the Manor House from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday Nov 30.

They also want to hear from anyone whose family was involved in collecting sphagnum moss on Ilkley Moor.

The moss had been used for more than 1,000 years in treating wounds - and it came back into widespread use as dressings during First World War.

The moss’s ability to absorb large amounts of moisture and its antiseptic qualities made it vitally important in the days before antibiotics.

The venue for this month’s local history hub will be slightly different.

Organiser Alex Cockshott said: “The Gift Christmas Makers Fair is taking place at the Manor House that weekend, so the Hub meeting will be in the Hub room on the first floor. This is reached via the Buttery, found immediately on the left upon entering the Manor House.”

The Ilkley History Hub was launched at the Manor House in March.
