ILKLEY could become a “police friendly” town, if a proposed idea goes ahead.

Councillor Mike Gibbons has suggested that Ilkley declares itself a “police friendly or supportive town.” He told a meeting of Ilkley Town Council this week that the scheme would be like an extension of neighbourhood watch.

His suggestion is now being looked into by Bradford council ward officer Sue Gledhill who told the meeting what she would like to do is come back with some examples.

She told the meeting: “What we don’t want is an area or town full of negative messages.”

She spoke about putting out more positive messages about welcoming people to Ilkley. She said they were also looking at positive messages about recycling and messages which could go on litter bins.

Neighbourhood Watch aims to bring neighbours together to create strong, friendly, active communities.
