TO mark the 50th anniversary of the release of The Who’s ground-breaking concept album ‘ Tommy’, Ilkley Amateur Operatic Company will be performing the musical at the King’s Hall from October 30 to November 2.

To add to the celebrations, they are inviting anyone who is also marking a 50th anniversary or birthday to join them for a free glass of fizz when they come to see the show. All you would have to do is present a copy of your birth or marriage certificate showing 1969, along with your ticket, and toast the show in style.

‘Tommy’ is being performed by the Youth section of IAOS, hot on the heels of their award-winning production of ‘Rent’ last year, and the sell-out success of ‘Les Mis’ the year before. The cast are all much too young to know the album (although many of them have actually heard of The Who!), or the Ken Russell film. For those of us old enough to remember the film, which featured Roger Daltry as the ‘deaf, dumb and blind kid’ who was a Pinball Wizard, and a memorable performance by Elton John in enormous boots, it might come as a relief to know that the stage show is somewhat milder with more developed characters. Director Mark Allan has created a more simple yet striking set, playing on light and darkness, rather than the rather psychedelic colours of the film. However, it still contains the complex and catchy songs, the music of which will be performed by a professional 8-piece band. Tickets are on sale now at www.ilkleyoperatic.co.uk or on 07763 816611 - this is the also the number to call for group bookings, for which there is a 10% discount. If you are celebrating 50, let the box office know which night you are coming so there are enough bubbles chilled!
