STEETON Male Voice Choir plans to recreate an iconic performance of Yorkshire anthem On Ilkla Moor Bah’t ‘At.

Musical director Catherine Sweet wants to generate the same atmosphere as when the song was performed in 1994 at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

She has tracked down band copies used for the performance as part of the Grand Finale of the 1994 Festival of Yorkshire Male Voices.

The recreation will be a highlight of the choir’s annual concert at the King’s Hall, Ilkley on October 26, with guests the City of Bradford Brass Band.

Choir spokesman Eric Parker said: “Catherine has been appreciative of the help and assistance given by Syd Harr, promoter and chairman of Cancer Research UK, and Janet Geldhill, an administrative working with the Huddersfield Committee, to locate the band copies.

“We are particularly thankful for them contacting William Relton, known as Bill the Braces, to gain his permission.

“On Ilkla Moor Bah’t ‘At is now immortalised under the proud titles of The National Anthem of the Broad Acres (1987) and The National Anthem of Our Proud County (1994).

“When we perform this song, maybe the audience will be able to show their true alliances. The audience will again be invited to join the choir and the band in singing and flag waving during Jerusalem and Land Of Hope and Glory.”

Choir members last year took part in the filming of upcoming movie Ilkley, which is due to be released soon, and they have invited the film’s director to the Oakley concert.

Eric said: “Harry Michell directed a ground-breaking dark comedy involving some of our country’s leading actors, Sir Derek Jacobi, Roger Allam, Anna Maxwell and Martin-Harry Melling.

“Much of the action involved a small number of Steeton Male Voice Choir singing on Ilkley Moor and in the surrounding area.

“Harry specialises in directing cutting edge films with brilliant actors but on a tight budget. He had hoped to have his film released in 2019 but this has been delayed by funding issues.

“The hopeful intention is now to premiere the film in 2020, and there are plans to sing On Ilkla Moor Bah’t ‘At at the launch, which could involve Steeton Male Squire and City of Bradford Brass Band.”
