A RENOWNED cinematographer who worked with David Bowie, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones has given a masterclass for Leeds Trinity students.

BAFTA award-winning cinematographer Anthony B Richmond, is the Chair of Cinematography at the New York Film Academy.

His masterclass in Leeds was given during a visit by academics from NYFA and is the start of a partnership between the academy and the university.

Renowned for his work with British director Nicolas Roeg during the 70s and 80s, Mr Richmond worked on science fiction film The Man Who Fell to Earth, starring David Bowie. In 1974, he won the BAFTA for Best Cinematography for independent thriller Don’t Look Now.

Mr Richmond was also responsible for photography on the influential British music scene of the late 60s, and he shot with the Rolling Stones and The Beatles. His most recent credits as Director of Photography include Legally Blonde, Good Luck Chuck, Just Friends, John Tucker Must Die and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.

He said: “I’m very fortunate to be in the position I am today, but I’ve never forgotten the help I got as a young man from my mentors. The students at Leeds Trinity are so lucky to have access to such fantastic media facilities and equipment as they start their careers in cinematography.”

Ricardo Barker, filmmaker and Senior Lecturer in Film Production at Leeds Trinity University, said: “The students, along with my colleagues and I, feel hugely fortunate to have met Anthony Richmond – not only to discuss his work but also his personal insights into the Art and Craft of Visual storytelling. Anthony has worked on some of the most seminal films in Motion Pictures and documentary in both Britain and the USA, and we found him and his work truly inspiring.”

Following the masterclass, a new partnership between New York Film Academy and Leeds Trinity University has been established. The institutions will work together on future projects.
