SCHOOLCHILDREN from Otley have been enjoying the thrills of a brand new double zip wire.

Pupils from Ashfield Primary School were the first official group to try out the new attraction at Herd Farm Residential and Activity Centre.

They visited the centre, at Eccup Reservoir, on Thursday, September 19 to put the zip wire through its paces.

They were joined on the outing by Leeds City Council’s Executive member for Children and Families, Councillor Fiona Venner, and Executive Member for Children’s Service, Councillor Julie Heselwood.

Also making a special guest appearance was Ronnie the Rhino - the mascot of Leeds Rhinos rugby league team.

The new zip wire is 150 metres long and takes two people on a downhill ride at the same time.

It replaces an older, single zip wire at the centre and is designed to provide a stepping stone for children and young people to progress to more challenging skill-based activities.

Councillor Venner said: “Since opening in 2000, Herd Farm has been making a real difference to children and young people’s lives by helping them develop skills and build confidence through challenging indoor and outdoor activities.

“It provides a safe and inclusive environment for children of all ages and abilities, as well as adults.

“I’m delighted that they are introducing a new zip wire to their ever growing list of activities which I’m sure will be enjoyed greatly.”

As well as zip lining, Herd Farm also offers more than 40 outdoor team activities including mountain boarding, archery, a giant swing and bush craft.

The centre works with more than 4,000 children and young people from Leeds each year to offer them learning experiences designed to help them gain confidence and develop new skills.

Run by Leeds City Council, Herd Farm also gives young people the chance to take part in all three levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold - of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
