A CHARITY is organising a special party for some of the oldest residents of Ilkley and the surrounding area.

Anyone aged over 90 is being invited to attend a vintage afternoon tea accompanied by nostalgic entertainment.

The Ilkley and District Good Neighbours Over 90s Party is the only event of its kind in the Bradford district. Last year’s party included people from Addingham, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Ilkley and Menston, who all enjoyed a musical show along with afternoon tea. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, September 28 at the Clarke Foley Centre in Cunliffe Road in Ilkley.

“The closing date for applications is very soon so we’d love to hear from people who are interested in attending,” said charity trustee Adrienne Heavisides.

“As usual the party is completely free and partners or escorts of those who are less mobile are also very welcome. We can in addition provide help with free transport on a first come, first served basis.”

The annual Afternoon Tea Party started more than 30 years ago and is always a hugely popular event, providing local older residents with the welcome chance to take part in an afternoon of song and nostalgia, along with the opportunity to get together with other over 90s for a chat.

“Many of our guests unfortunately don’t get out that often, so this is an ideal way of being in a friendly place, to listen to some familiar songs, meet up with friends, and feel they are part of the community,” said Adrienne.

This year’s party guests will be serenaded by a medley of popular 1940’s songs played by pianist Myra Johnson, followed by a performance by Ilkley Moor Notes, and a saxophone session of vintage music by Steph Atkinson. The musical finale will include a sing-along with the popular Shirley Britten, who has been a regular contributor to the event.

Adrienne added: “Last year students from Ilkley Grammar School and Wharfedale Air Cadets served the guests their Afternoon Tea and we hope that we can enlist their help again.”

Apart from the guests, the event will be attended by local representatives of the community, including the Lord Mayor and the Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire, David Pearson.

Anyone aged 90 or over who would like an invitation is asked to contact Ilkley and District Good Neighbours at Riddings Hall, Riddings Road, Ilkley on 01943 603348, or email info@goodneighboursilkley.org.uk as soon as possible as booking forms need to be returned to the office by August 30.
