ST Mary’s, Menston sixth form student Tom Allan was awarded The Barbara Ward Award at the Celebrating Young People Awards Ceremony held at the Curzon Cinema in London’s West End on Wednesday, July 3.

The Celebrating Young People Awards honour the achievements of those young people who make our communities and our world a better place. Award recipients are drawn from throughout England and Wales and reflect achievements in every area of social action.

The Barbara Ward Award is specifically awarded for ‘Caring for the Environment: to recognise young people who have conserved, enhanced or protected creation’.

Once initial nominations are made, recipients are whittled down to a shortlist in each category. Judging panels, made up of celebrated figures, then choose who will be publicly honoured at the ceremony.

Tom was nominated for the award by St. Mary’s Lay Chaplain, Mrs Findlay following his work with the Global Warriors group within school.

Tom was accompanied on the day by his proud parents.

Mrs Findlay said: “Tom is a most deserving recipient of this award. In sharing awareness of the urgent need to love and protect our environment as God’s creation he inspires, encourages and empowers his peers to get involved, act and speak out."
