LAURA King of Ilkley has been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2019 Junior World Orienteering Championships in Denmark.
Competing at JWOC, as it is known, represents the highest challenge a junior can aspire to in the sport of orienteering.
Forty-one countries will be competing at JWOC 2019, each with teams of up to six men and six women.
The week-long world championships are based around the city of Silkeborg in central Jutland.
Four styles of orienteering will be tested involving individual races over sprint, middle and long distances, together with a team relay event.
The lightening-fast sprint orienteering race will be held in a complex urban area of Aarhus.
The other races will be in the largely deciduous woods of Denmark’s undulating lake district around Silkeborg.
The 20 year-old former student of Ilkley Grammar School has represented Great Britain on several occasions at both European and World levels.
This will be King’s last major competition as a junior. It represents the climax to a year of dedicated physical and technical training, competing in domestic selection races and gaining familiarity with Danish terrain.
King is a member of local orienteering club Airienteers and also captain of Edinburgh University Orienteering Club.
Her preparations for JWOC have been supported by the British Orienteering Talent Development Squad.
