THE first ever Minimal Waste Market was held in the Grange car park in Burley-in-Wharfedale on Sunday from 11am to 2pm.

It was very well attended and included a vegan Indonesian Street food stall, vintage stall, Moin Moin Bread stall, recycled jewellery and clothing stalls and the Waste Not shop in The Grange. It also included the launch of Plastic Free Burley, a group working together with the aim to achieve Plastic Free Community status for the village.

This was followed by the annual Duck Race on the River Wharfe. The event is organised by the Burley Community Trust and the race itself was co-ordinated by Tom Sumner and his team who braved the chilly river.

The event saw 3,500 ducks launched into the river. They raced downstream on the current to the finishing line. The winning duck (2206) belonged to Louise Grant. Second was Mary Dale (21) and third Jim Cocker (112).

The race costs £1 per duck with cash prizes of up to £100 on offer. All funds raised are used towards the Christmas Lights and other community projects such as the new Scout and Guide Hut.

The duck race was followed by teas, cakes and ice creams served on the village green by the Guides and a litter pick, with one group tackling the river area and the other, including the guides, taking care of the village green and surrounding areas including the park.

Plastic Free Burley will also have a stall alongside the Community Trust at Grange Park on Sunday, August 18 as part of the Burley Summer Festival. After which there will be another litter pick from 4pm.
