A RUGBY legend has returned to his old school to meet a young player who is following in his footsteps.

Steve Burnhill visited Woodhouse Grove, at Apperley Bridge, to present the Burnhill Cup to Year 13 student James Whitcombe. Just as Steve was, James is currently 1st XV Captain at Woodhouse Grove, a Leicester Tigers player and has represented England.

James would normally have received the cup at the school’s Prize Day but the date clashed with a Leicester Tigers exchange programme in Australia, so Steve agreed to present it a few weeks early.

James, who started his rugby journey at Skipton RFC aged five, joined the Leicester Tigers Academy in 2017. He has also played for Keighley RUFC and Bradford and Bingley RFC. He joined Woodhouse Grove in Year 7 and credits the school coaches for helping him develop his game.
