VOLUNTEERS have been removing debris from the River Wharfe at Otley.

A community riverside clean-up, run by the River Stewardship Company in partnership with the Environment Agency and Leeds City Council, was held on Thursday, May 16.

The work was part of ongoing work to maintain the river and its banks and help reduce the risk of flooding.

Those taking part - helped by low river levels - removed Himalayan balsam from the islands downstream of Otley Weir, and along the banks. They also cleared large amounts of driftwood and broken trees and branches that had been caught in the trees on the islands.

The next Otley river clean-up day will be held on Thursday, June 13 with more details to be confirmed. For more details on the progress of Otley’s flood defence project, meanwhile, visit www.leeds.gov.uk/parking-roads-and-travel/otley-flood-alleviation-scheme .
