KAYLA ‘K.M.’ Herbert launches her debut poetry collection, Between the spaces, with illustrator, Sussi Louise Smith on Thursday, May 16 at the Grove Bookshop in Ilkley.
The launch, from 7pm to 8.30pm, will feature a short talk from poet, Kayla, and illustrator, Sussi. This will be followed by a reading of the poetry and a Q&A session with the audience. Participants will have the opportunity to view the illustrations and hear the inspiration behind each piece while also learning from the artist on how the poetry was interpreted into illustrations.
Originally from Canada, Kayla now resides in Yorkshire where she compiled and wrote the bulk of the poems for Between the spaces. This postcard sized collection examines the spaces between who we are and the stories we tell ourselves. In 12 poems and paintings, Kayla and Sussi explore the loss of an adolescent past, the longing for a future, and the magic we find along the way.
Kayla said: “I’m very excited to introduce a new type of poetry into the literary world. I think our multidisciplinary approach in this collection not only makes the poems more accessible but also enriched. You can’t help but be influenced by the images when you read each poem and have the poetry change how you view the illustrations. We hope our readers will find this experience inspiring.”
