MOURNERS gathered to remember former teacher Barbara Barnes as her ashes were committed to the earth in an Ilkley memorial garden.
Family travelled over from New Zealand to say their final goodbyes in a service which followed Palm Sunday Mass at St Margaret’s Church.
Mrs Barnes died in October aged 90 but after her Requiem Mass the committal was delayed to allow family members living in New Zealand to attend. Barbara, who was born in Preston, came to Ilkley with her husband Allan in 1982.
In his eulogy six months ago the Vicar, Canon Philip Gray said the themes which had struck him most strongly about Barbara were family, friends, faithfulness and faith.
He stressed that her faithfulness “was undoubtedly one of the reasons why her marriage, family life and friendships have been so fruitful. Barbara was honest when it was required and if serious things needed to be said, she would say them. However this was mixed with loyalty and discretion.”
