FOR over 70 years, the people of Ilkley have enjoyed a happy and fruitful relationship with the citizens of Coutances in Normandy, thanks to two enthusiastic schoolmasters from either side of the Channel, who set up the IGS-Lycée Prévert exchange just after the Second World War.

This in turn led to the very successful town twinning, which reaches its 50th birthday this year.

As part of the celebrations, between April 10th and 13th, Ilkley Moornotes Choir are hosting the French town’s gospel ensemble.

Singing links were established in April 2016, when La Canterie du Rey, a sister choir to Appel Gospel, enjoyed a short but action-packed stay with Moornoters, culminating in a sparkling joint concert.

Such was the camaraderie generated, that a most enjoyable return ‘leg’ to Normandy took place the following year, cementing friendships.

During the coming celebratory visit, a Moornotes welcome evening buffet and entertainment will be followed by local outings with hosts, a civic reception and trip to York and, of course, lots of singing.

The grand finale will once again be a joint concert at 7.30pm at Christchurch, Ilkley on Friday, April 12th, where there will be the well-loved Moornotes blend of popular harmonies old and new, combined with the energy and dynamism of the renowned Appel Gospel.

In short, music for all tastes and ages, in English … et en français! All are warmly invited to come and enjoy the fun.
